Both give you a lockable space you rent by the month. They suit different jobs.
Access
A container sits on open ground, so you can usually reverse a van right up to the doors and load straight in. Self storage rooms are inside a building, reached by corridors, lifts and trolleys. If you're in and out with tools or stock several times a week, drive-up access saves a lot of time.
Cost
Containers are usually cheaper per square foot. There's no building to heat, light, staff or maintain.
Protection
A good container is wind and watertight, but it isn't climate controlled. It can get warm in summer, and condensation can form in cold snaps. Pallets under everything, a gap at the walls and breathable covers solve most of it. Paperwork, fabrics, antiques and electronics are better indoors.
Security
Look for a fenced yard, a locked gate or controlled entry, lighting and CCTV, and use a good closed-shackle padlock or a lock box.
Which to pick
Trades, contractors, landscapers, event hire firms and anyone storing bulky, robust kit tend to suit a container. Household contents you won't touch for months, documents and delicate items suit indoor storage. Compare container storage and independent self storage near you.
