A container keeps the weather out, but what happens inside depends on how you pack it. Condensation is the main enemy.
Get things off the floor
Put pallets or timber battens down first. Even a dry floor gets cold, and cold surfaces attract moisture.
Leave air gaps
Keep items a few centimetres off the walls and leave a path down the middle. Air moving around your things stops damp settling.
Use breathable covers
Cotton dust sheets, not plastic. Plastic sheeting traps moisture against furniture and fabric.
Absorb what moisture there is
Moisture absorbers or desiccant tubs help, especially through winter. Check and empty them every few weeks.
Load heavy first, at the back
Heavy, rarely needed items go at the back and on the bottom. Things you'll want go near the doors. Keep a list or photo of what's where.
What not to store
Fuel, gas bottles, chemicals, anything flammable, food and anything alive. Most operators ban these in the agreement, and your insurance won't cover them.
