About caravan storage

Most people want a caravan or motorhome off the drive for the winter, or all year if the street or the deeds won't allow it. Farms, yards and storage sites across the UK let hardstanding or grass pitches for exactly this. These are independent operators, so you deal with the owner, not a call centre.

What to check before you book

  • Security: perimeter fencing, access control, CCTV, and whether anyone is on site. CaSSOA accreditation is a quick way to compare.
  • Access hours: can you collect the van at 6am on a Saturday, or only in office hours?
  • Term: some sites let pitches on six- or twelve-month terms rather than rolling monthly.
  • Ground: hardstanding or grass, and whether there are trees overhead.
  • Insurance: tell your insurer where the van will be and check they accept the site.

Getting a van ready for winter

The Camping and Caravanning Club's advice comes down to a few habits: drain the water system fully, because that's the best protection from frost; keep the leisure battery charged or take it home; leave the fridge door, lockers and beds open so air circulates; turn the wheels every six to eight weeks; and fit a hitch lock or wheel clamp. Visit now and then to check for damp.

Questions

How much is caravan storage?

Pitch prices depend on the site, the length of your van and the term, and many operators only quote on request, so we don't show a pitch price here. Ring two or three sites and ask for the price for your length, what's included and whether it's rolling monthly or a fixed term.

What is a CaSSOA site?

CaSSOA is the Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association, formed in 1999 to tackle caravan theft. It accredits secure storage sites at Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, based on security measures such as perimeter protection, lockable gates, CCTV and monitored entry. Some insurers offer a discount for keeping a van on an accredited site.

Do I need to tell my insurer where my caravan is stored?

Yes. Where the van is kept is normally part of your policy, so tell your insurer before you move it and check they accept the site. Many policies also require a hitch lock, wheel clamp or similar while it is in storage.

Can I store a motorhome or campervan as well?

Most sites that take caravans also take motorhomes, but pitch length and height limits differ. Give the operator the overall length of the vehicle, including any tow bar or bike rack.

Got a yard, containers or units to let?
